Media Languages

Discuss how you use media languages in one of your coursework productions to create meaning for the audience. We used the following to create meaning through our music video. At A2, we created a music video. We were a girl band of three girls, we wanted to create a fun and loving music video which really represented us as a band and as a group of friends. We used media language and applied genre conventions. We will be analysing camera, editing, mise en scene and sound. When watching our music video, we wanted our audience to feel involved with the singers, we wanted them to feel like they knew them and that they could relate to what was going on and enjoy the fun scenes within the video. We incorporated Barthes theory of enigma codes into our music video by getting them o think of questions such as, how are he girls happy? how can I be as happy as them? Our audience seek these things from our music video, this is because our video promotes happiness and also helps to make people t...

Representation Question

Representation is the way in which characters are portrayed in a film. In year 12 we created a film opening called 'On Track'. The characters in the film were both girls who were training for an athletics competition where they would go head to head in the women's 100m race. The settings included in the film opening represented what the film was going to be based on, we used the running track, the swimming pool, the field and also the long jump sand pit. By using all of these settings we allowed the audience to know what the film was going to be about instantly and that was sports. In our film we did not represent any disabilities, this was because we were focusing on Olympics not Paralympics, we represented this by both main characters being able training well. Social class was a big thing within our film, the split screen which we created showed this well. You can see the two girls getting ready and training separately and how different their lives are, for example ...

Audience Question

Audience is the group of people who watch your product. At A2 we created a music video, the target audience that we aimed our music video at was a wide range of ages. They ranged from 16-24 years old, this was a mix of both girls and boys which allowed us to gain more fans. We used psycho graphic profiling research in order to find out what or target audience was like. Due to doing this feedback, we found out that our audience was generally main streamers, which meant that they were the biggest type of audience group. We decided to sue social media as a way in which we would promote our band and also advertise our new and upcoming music video. This then meant that our audience knew that the music video was coming up and also when it was being released, this was due to them following us through this process. They were able to do this by following us on our social media pages, which we used because we felt this was the best way to target the ages of our audience due to them using soc...

Narrative Question

Narrative is the way in which the story is constructed and how it affects the audience. The film opening which we created at AS level was called 'On Track', it was a drama based around the story of two girls who are completely different in the sporting world training for the same competition. In the film opening the two girls are training for the Olympics, you see the split screen of both girls which shows the comparison's between them with one being more advantaged than the other. We used the theme of sport as we felt that not a lot of women are involved in sports films so we felt that by doing this our film opening would stand out. We used the locations such as the running track, the swimming pool, and the field to really get that sport vibe for the audience and to show that the girls were training hard but not getting the same use of facilities. Levi Strause had the theory of binary oppositions, we brought this into our film opening in many ways. One way was by using s...

Genre Question

Apply the concept of genre to one of your coursework productions. Genre is the style or category of art, music or literature. Daniel Chandler is a theorist who says that 'genre is a type', he said that the genre should meet the audience expectations of the genre. In our film opening which we created at AS called 'On Track', we subverted the target audience's expectations, we did this by using two girls in the film rather than men which are mainly used in most sports films. We conformed the expectations by using the settings of the running track and the swimming pool. Steve Neale is a theorist who believes that genre is based on repetition and difference. The settings which we used were the running track, the swimming pool, the gym, the field and also the girl's houses. These settings all linked to the genre of the film which was sports, this made it easy for our audience to straight away identify our film genre which also meant that they were instantly engag...

Conventions

In your experience how has your understanding of conventions developed through creating your productions? At AS I created a film opening called 'On Track', it was important that we made the film opening intriguing and striking in order to get the audience to want to watch the actual film. Genre is the style of the film. the genre of our film opening was important because we wanted to do something which was fun and had a good story behind it. We chose the genre of sport, this was because as a group we all liked sports and we also felt that it would widen our target audience due to sports being a big and popular thing. It is important to have a good genre as it allows your film to be easily recognized and understood by the audience, this is because they should be able to see straight away what the film is about and based on. To create our film opening, it was vital that we did a lot of research on how they are made and also what goes into them. We researched similar films, so ...

Research and Planning

Explain how your research and planning skills have developed over time and how this has contributed to your final media outcomes. Throughout the two years we have produced a film opening as well as a music video. In year 12 we had to do a lot of research for our film opening, we had to research what a film opening was, this showed us what we needed to include in our own film opening. Titles.com gave us help with adding titles onto our footage, it gave us the knowledge of what type of titles look good and matched our film opening genre as we felt this was important. We researched good ways of presenting, we found that power point and slide share were good ways to present our ideas, these allowed us to present our ideas professionally. Narrative, genre, industry- we had to do research on these factors so that we knew what to include in our film openings, by researching and finding out what genre's suited what and what narratives were best to go by, it helped us to understand how t...
