Research and Planning

Explain how your research and planning skills have developed over time and how this has contributed to your final media outcomes.

Throughout the two years we have produced a film opening as well as a music video.

In year 12 we had to do a lot of research for our film opening, we had to research what a film opening was, this showed us what we needed to include in our own film opening. Titles.com gave us help with adding titles onto our footage, it gave us the knowledge of what type of titles look good and matched our film opening genre as we felt this was important. We researched good ways of presenting, we found that power point and slide share were good ways to present our ideas, these allowed us to present our ideas professionally. Narrative, genre, industry- we had to do research on these factors so that we knew what to include in our film openings, by researching and finding out what genre's suited what and what narratives were best to go by, it helped us to understand how the industry was divided into themes and also who lead the industry which was the big six.
We also had to do a lot of planning  in year 12 in order to produce our products at the best they could be. We did dancing animals which was where we had to edit footage together and match it, this gave us editing technique skills and also gave us a chance to use premiere for the first time. We also did Juno which was where we had to get our own footage matching it to the original scene from the film, this allowed us to learn how to film and also how to upload our footage and edit it, we learnt different camera angles and also how to replicate effects with this task. We then did a prelim task, this taught us how much work would have to go into our real film opening, in the sense of filming and getting the right amount of footage, also editing and uploading. We created storyboards for our film opening and Juno. These helped us to know exactly what we needed to shoot and what shots were needed at what time and also how long the shots needed to last, along with the shooting schedule. We also had to make risk assessments for when we were filming, this was to ensure that we knew all of the risks that were possible in the area that we were filming and also then the solution if any hazards occurred. We also had to plan which props were needed when filming, this was to make sure that the footage made sense and also the props made our footage more interesting, the props list also helped us to gather everything we needed for our final product. The website that we created was very simplistic with a few images of the characters in the film and also a small section explaining a bit about the film and also the release date. DISTINCT- we adapted this to our film opening in order to help us know exactly what we needed to include. Describe in detail what is going on- we wanted our audience to know what was happening, settings were important- this was because the setting explained the story line, theme- again this was important to show to the audience and also to keep this going through to the actual film, having the narrative was important as we wanted to ensure that there was a good story line. Characters were important as we wanted to make sure that they played the part well.

In year 13 we also had to do a lot of research. The first bit we did was what music means to me, we had to research songs from our childhood, as well as giving us a look at the industry, this also allowed us to have an emotional attachment, which then helped us to feel closer to the music and feel more involved with our favorite genres and types of music. We then had to look at what makes a music video, Carol Vernalis and Andrew Goodwin taught us about forms and conventions which are good to include and gave us ideas on how to make our music video to look professional and diverse. We had to listen to a song with our eyes closed, this allowed us to visualize the song and this helped us to see how music made us feel and also how creative you can be with music. Genre research was important, we had to look at what other genres include and how we can replicate them, this was done in a lot more depth than we did for our film opening in year 12, this is because we took more information from it, for example stereotypes. We did 30 second breakdown of a song, this gave us an idea of how to set the scene at the start of the music video and also it helped us to see how themes were continued throughout the video, with this we also got to see the amount of shots that were included in those 30 seconds and this then gave us an idea of how many shots and how much footage we would need. Artist analysis researched allowed us to see how the artist is portrayed to the audience and how they get their name known and their image shown to the world, this was vital because we wanted to be well known and build up a big fan base. Our prelim task for our music video helped us to see how much footage and work was going to be needed for the real music video, it also helped us to see how quick the shots were going to have to be. Our prelim task didn't go too well, this is because the actor we chose wasn't very confident and therefore we didn't feel that we got the optimum performance out of them which then meant that the video didn't come across how it was meant to, we learnt form this and tried to create a better performance in our real music video. The lip sync task helped us to see which person in the group would be best for the performance in the music video, we decided to be a girl band so three of us were chosen for this.
In year 13 planning was vital. Stealomatic was our first task, this was a collection of visuals we wanted to use within the music video, I edited it onto premiere with audio of our song so we then had an idea of what visuals we anted to film ourselves. Our storyboard was created as a video, this meant that it was in a lot more depth than ion year 12. This helped us to be able to understand exactly what was happening in each shots as it was being explained with a voice over, and also we found out  how it would evolve throughout the video. The shooting schedule was done in a lot more detail as well, it had 100s more shots we needed to include and this meant that we could be precise in getting the shot that we needed. The website that we made for our girl band was interactive and synergized to match our product, this meant that we were easily recognizable and we stood out due to the colours we used throughout. The website was very detailed filled with information about each band member, images form behind the scenes and photo shoots, a teaser video, merchandise and also the song itself, this website was a lot more in depth and also a lot more professional than the one which we created in year 12, this shows our progression. The digipak that we made took quite a few drafts, we had to do a lot of planing to find out how a digipak was set out and what went where on it. The photos which we placed on the digipak were taken in a location which matched our them and they were edited on Photoshop in order to make them sharp and clear so that we could produce a fresh and professional product. We also made a props list which was vital as we had more props than year 12 as we wanted to make our video professional, this meant that we needed to focus a lot on our outfits and also the props which we included in the video, like the animals for example. We also had to do a lot of marketing to promote our band, we did this mainly through social media as we felt this best matched our target audience.
