Representation Question

Representation is the way in which characters are portrayed in a film.

In year 12 we created a film opening called 'On Track'. The characters in the film were both girls who were training for an athletics competition where they would go head to head in the women's 100m race. The settings included in the film opening represented what the film was going to be based on, we used the running track, the swimming pool, the field and also the long jump sand pit. By using all of these settings we allowed the audience to know what the film was going to be about instantly and that was sports.

In our film we did not represent any disabilities, this was because we were focusing on Olympics not Paralympics, we represented this by both main characters being able training well. Social class was a big thing within our film, the split screen which we created showed this well. You can see the two girls getting ready and training separately and how different their lives are, for example you see a shot of both of their running trainers- the rich girls are top of the range brand new and very clean whereas the poorer girl's are dirty, worn out and broken. Another shot with the split screen shows the difference in the facilities where both girls train, again it was vital for us to show a big difference so the richer girl was training with lots of different facilities such as the swimming pool, the running track, the gym with the weights, however the poorer girl only had a field and a sand pit to train with. This was important for us as we wanted the audience to know what we were trying to portray. There was not a big representation of age within our film, the two main characters are aged around 18, we showed this by their outfits which were bright and fashionable which we felt showed they were young and we also showed this by them still living at home.

We subverted the stereotype of men being the main characters in sports films by having two girls being the main characters of the film. This is an anti sports model.

Laura Melvey was a theorist who believed that all women are sexualised in films, we definitely subverted this as in our film there are no men and also the women are shown as strong, independent sports women.

Angela McRobbie had a theory that all men and women are represented through stereotypes. Within our film I believe that we again subverted this as our women aren't shown as weak girls who don't play sport or do things on their own which is often a stereotype linked with women. In our film the girls are completely different to this.

  1. P2 good - any theory?
What about the representation of training in a city? What was the main theme represented and how did you hint at it in your opening?
sp Mulvey and Mc Robbie include them in your essay earlier on
