Media Languages
Discuss how you use media languages in one of your coursework productions to create meaning for the audience.
We used the following to create meaning through our music video. At A2, we created a music video. We were a girl band of three girls, we wanted to create a fun and loving music video which really represented us as a band and as a group of friends. We used media language and applied genre conventions. We will be analysing camera, editing, mise en scene and sound.
When watching our music video, we wanted our audience to feel involved with the singers, we wanted them to feel like they knew them and that they could relate to what was going on and enjoy the fun scenes within the video. We incorporated Barthes theory of enigma codes into our music video by getting them o think of questions such as, how are he girls happy? how can I be as happy as them? Our audience seek these things from our music video, this is because our video promotes happiness and also helps to make people to feel confident in themselves.
Throughout the video the girls were equally represented, for example we all popped the balloons, this instantly showed our fun and friendly vibe to the audience. The movement of the camera in the music video varies, in some shots we wanted the movement to be restricted so that it was only the one person in the shot or only the group in the shot. Whereas at some points in the video we wanted a lot of movement in the shot as we wanted to show the scenery and the settings that we were at, this is because these represented the theme and genre of the music video and also allowed us to capture great shots for the video. The framing of the shots were vital, this is because in some shots we wanted the focus to be on certain things, for example we may have only wanted the focus to be on the pigs so we would ensure that the framing worked around this and didn't include anything else in the shot which would make the pigs look not as important. We also wanted to breakup the static shots and to keep the audience more interested for example when we were dancing on the logs and walking towards the camera and also when going down the slides. All of these shots again showing our fun side to the audience.
Our genre of county and pop was enhanced by the outfits that we wore during the video, these were the typical countrified outfits- such as the checkered shirts and the cowboy hats, but we did also have a bit of glam to fit in with our pop theme. We subverted the Nashville stereotype by using the English countryside instead, this enabled our music video to stand out due to being different to other country videos.
The editing within our music video that we used was things such as the clone shot- this showed the full body which showed our fun and childish side. There were lots of quick cuts throughout the video which were cut specifically to the beat which helped to keep the audience interested and also to keep them happy.
