Genre Essay

At AS we created a film opening called On Track, this had a sports genre. We conformed and subverted to the conventions of a sports film. It was vital to make the genre of our film clear to the audience and also to be recognisable.  We researched similar sports films in order to see what we could include in our own. We looked at Fast Girls which was the main film that influenced us with our film opening. This was because it was a low budget film which meant that a lot of the locations used within were available for us to use at school, such as the running track, swimming pool, field, studio. There were also some themes in this film that we felt would be good to have in our film opening. One of them being jealousy between the two main characters and another being rich vs poor. Another sports film that we researched was Double Teamed, in this film there are two girls who are completely different, but both have love and passion for the sport of running. Again, from this film we g...

How Facebook changed the world

'Somebody had to show the outside world what was happening' A fruit seller committed suicide due to not being allowed to sell his produce and the pressures of life becoming too much. The day after, 100s of people gathered in the place where he died and began shouting about what they believed in as they felt the same as the fruit seller. Video footage of this protest was shown online on Facebook, it began to become a confrontation but then soon turned into a street war with the police. However, even though all of this had happened, nothing was shown on television the next day. The police wanted to arrest anyone who was filming as they didn't want any of the footage to get out. However with 2 million of the Tunisian people on Facebook, this meant that they knew they could put the footage on here. Once the footage was released on Facebook, the videos went viral at an uncontrollable speed, it was then shown on television. Police then started to stand on the streets in case an...

Media Languages

Discuss how you use media languages in one of your coursework productions to create meaning for the audience. We used the following to create meaning through our music video. At A2, we created a music video. We were a girl band of three girls, we wanted to create a fun and loving music video which really represented us as a band and as a group of friends. We used media language and applied genre conventions. We will be analysing camera, editing, mise en scene and sound. When watching our music video, we wanted our audience to feel involved with the singers, we wanted them to feel like they knew them and that they could relate to what was going on and enjoy the fun scenes within the video. We incorporated Barthes theory of enigma codes into our music video by getting them o think of questions such as, how are he girls happy? how can I be as happy as them? Our audience seek these things from our music video, this is because our video promotes happiness and also helps to make people t...

Representation Question

Representation is the way in which characters are portrayed in a film. In year 12 we created a film opening called 'On Track'. The characters in the film were both girls who were training for an athletics competition where they would go head to head in the women's 100m race. The settings included in the film opening represented what the film was going to be based on, we used the running track, the swimming pool, the field and also the long jump sand pit. By using all of these settings we allowed the audience to know what the film was going to be about instantly and that was sports. In our film we did not represent any disabilities, this was because we were focusing on Olympics not Paralympics, we represented this by both main characters being able training well. Social class was a big thing within our film, the split screen which we created showed this well. You can see the two girls getting ready and training separately and how different their lives are, for example ...

Audience Question

Audience is the group of people who watch your product. At A2 we created a music video, the target audience that we aimed our music video at was a wide range of ages. They ranged from 16-24 years old, this was a mix of both girls and boys which allowed us to gain more fans. We used psycho graphic profiling research in order to find out what or target audience was like. Due to doing this feedback, we found out that our audience was generally main streamers, which meant that they were the biggest type of audience group. We decided to sue social media as a way in which we would promote our band and also advertise our new and upcoming music video. This then meant that our audience knew that the music video was coming up and also when it was being released, this was due to them following us through this process. They were able to do this by following us on our social media pages, which we used because we felt this was the best way to target the ages of our audience due to them using soc...

Narrative Question

Narrative is the way in which the story is constructed and how it affects the audience. The film opening which we created at AS level was called 'On Track', it was a drama based around the story of two girls who are completely different in the sporting world training for the same competition. In the film opening the two girls are training for the Olympics, you see the split screen of both girls which shows the comparison's between them with one being more advantaged than the other. We used the theme of sport as we felt that not a lot of women are involved in sports films so we felt that by doing this our film opening would stand out. We used the locations such as the running track, the swimming pool, and the field to really get that sport vibe for the audience and to show that the girls were training hard but not getting the same use of facilities. Levi Strause had the theory of binary oppositions, we brought this into our film opening in many ways. One way was by using s...
